ICAN states attacks on Iranian nuclear sites break international law

(MENAFN) The International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN) has strongly condemned the recent U.S. military strikes on Iranian nuclear sites, labeling the actions as “illegal.” In an official statement, ICAN called on the United States to cease its unlawful operations against Iran and to return to diplomatic negotiations.

“By joining Israel’s attack on Iran, the US is also breaking international law,” the statement declared, quoting ICAN Executive Director Melissa Parke.

Parke emphasized that “military action against Iran is not the way to resolve concerns over Tehran’s nuclear program.” She further pointed out that U.S. intelligence assessments indicate Iran is not pursuing nuclear weapons, describing the strikes as “a senseless and reckless act that could undermine international efforts to prevent the further proliferation of nuclear weapons.”

Expressing regret that diplomatic channels were abandoned prior to Israel’s use of force, Parke stated, “This does not make the region or the world safer. It makes it more dangerous.”

She warned that attacks on nuclear facilities violate international law and carry significant risks of radioactive contamination, threatening both human health and the environment.

Urging an immediate halt to all military actions, Parke called for a return to dialogue and diplomacy.

These criticisms came amid escalating tensions in the region, following the announcement by the U.S. President that American forces had executed “very successful” airstrikes on three Iranian nuclear sites, sparking fears of a wider conflict.
