Iran backs Turkey’s PKK disarmament efforts
Touching on economic ties, Araghchi said Iran is prepared to renew its natural gas agreement with Türkiye and expand collaboration in the broader energy sector. He noted that discussions with Fidan included plans to open an additional border crossing, establish new trade centers, link the two countries through a railway line, and bring technical teams together to advance preferential trade arrangements.
Araghchi added that the upcoming launch of an Iranian consulate in Türkiye’s eastern Van province is expected to strengthen bilateral relations further.
He also said that the two ministers addressed a wide spectrum of regional challenges, including the status of Iran’s nuclear talks, U.S. sanctions, joint initiatives regarding the Palestinian issue, and concerns over Israel’s actions in Gaza, including what he described as violations of the cease-fire. On Syria, he remarked that "Syria's stability and peace depend on the preservation of its territorial integrity, and the biggest threat comes from Israel."
The PKK—designated a terrorist group by Türkiye, the U.S., and the EU—held a congress in May and declared its dissolution after its imprisoned leader, Abdullah Ocalan, called in February for an end to the organization’s long-running campaign of violence. On July 11, a group of 30 PKK members, including 15 women, surrendered in Iraq’s Sulaymaniyah province and destroyed their weapons by tossing them into a burning cauldron.
In line with the new post-conflict framework, Türkiye’s parliament has formed the National Solidarity, Brotherhood, and Democracy Committee, which is tasked with reviewing the legal and political dimensions of the transition period following the group’s disarmament.
